Block Paving Patios in Guildford
Small-unit paving that turns corners, follows curves and ties a garden to the driveway — with every block liftable if the garden ever changes.
Block paving in a garden behaves differently from block paving on a drive. There is no vehicle load, so the design can be lighter and the patterns freer — and because the units are small, a block paved terrace handles curves, steps and irregular boundaries far more gracefully than large-format slabs.
Why block paving suits gardens
Small units mean fewer awkward cuts around a curved border, a tree pit or a shed base. They also let you change direction, colour or pattern to define zones — a seating area, a path, a bin store — without introducing a hard material change.
And if you dig up part of the garden in five years for a garden room or a new border, the blocks lift and relay. Nothing else does that as cleanly.
- Follows curves and awkward shapes with minimal cutting
- Blocks lift and relay if the garden layout changes
- Ties visually to a block paved driveway at the front
- Wide choice of colours, formats and setts

Styles, patterns and borders
Without vehicle loads, patterns that would be too weak for a driveway come into play. Basketweave and stretcher bond read as traditional and calm; running bond emphasises the length of a narrow garden; a circle feature or fan pattern gives a seating area its own centre.
Borders do the heavy lifting visually. A double soldier course around the terrace edge, a contrasting sett band between patio and lawn, or a charcoal edge against buff paving all make the finished area look designed rather than surfaced.
Colours and materials
Concrete block pavers offer the broadest colour range and the best value. Clay pavers cost more but hold their colour permanently and have a warmth that suits older Surrey houses. Granite and sandstone setts work beautifully as borders, thresholds and paths between planting.
Choose colour outdoors and wet. A buff that looks warm in a brochure can read yellow against grey render, and charcoal that looks smart in the yard can feel heavy in a small enclosed garden.
Groundwork and drainage
A pedestrian-only patio needs less depth than a driveway: typically 100–150mm of compacted MOT Type 1 over a membrane, then a 30–40mm screeded sand bed. Where the area will take a hot tub, a garden building or occasional vehicle access, we increase the build-up accordingly and tell you why.
Edge restraints are still concreted in on every side, otherwise the paving spreads and joints open. Falls run away from the house at around 1:80, and where a garden is enclosed by walls we add a channel drain or gravel drainage margin so water is not trapped against brickwork.
Jointing, maintenance and repairs
The terrace is compacted over a protective mat, jointed with kiln-dried sand and re-vibrated until joints are full. In a garden, where wash-out from downpipes and hosepipes is common, polymeric jointing sand is often worth the extra.
Maintenance is topping up joint sand every couple of years, clearing leaves and washing rather than blasting. Sunken or stained areas lift and relay — the same repairability that makes block paving worth choosing on a driveway.
